BORN.AT.SEA PHILOSOPHY

BORN.AT.SEA was built on a simple belief: great clothing should outlast seasons, trends, and sometimes even us.

Our story is deeply inspired by travel, exploration, and the spirit of adventure — the curiosity to see the world, to move, to experience life fully. Every piece we create carries that energy: a sense of freedom, discovery, and the desire to keep moving forward.

We focus on what truly matters: quality fabrics, expert craftsmanship, and designs that balance classic style with a modern edge. No rushing, no fashion calendar, no compromises. We release our products only when they’re perfect, working directly with our community to offer honest prices and real value.

Every garment is designed to be worn, lived in, and loved — practical, comfortable, and understated in the best way. Clothing that adapts to your journey, whether you’re exploring a city, the coast, or your own neighborhood.

We partner exclusively with top-tier manufacturers who share our commitment to precision, responsibility, and fair working conditions. By combining meticulous handcraft with innovative techniques, we ensure each piece meets the highest standard.

BORN.AT.SEA isn’t about dressing up — it’s about dressing for life, for adventure, for the journey. It’s about building a wardrobe that feels effortless, grounded, and timeless.

THE PEOPLE BEHIND B.A.S

BORN.AT.SEA was created by two people coming from different worlds, but sharing the same obsession: making clothes that feel as good as they look.

Valérie is French with Malagasy roots, with a background that sits at the intersection of art and fashion. She studied Visual Arts at HEAD – Geneva and later trained as a shoe designer. She began her career as a freelance stylist before working as a product developer for major fashion houses within groups such as LVMH for eight years. Her experience has given her a deep understanding of how a product comes together — from the initial idea to materials, proportions, construction, and final execution.

But beyond fashion, vintage has always been a personal passion. A collector since her teenage years, she has a natural instinct for finding pieces with character, unusual details, great proportions, or simply something that makes them feel special. This eye for the unexpected is an important part of what she brings to BORN.AT.SEA.

Stephan is Austrian and has no traditional background in fashion — and that is precisely what he brings to BORN.AT.SEA. More than fifteen years ago, he began having his clothes made bespoke and became deeply interested in the world of tailoring, fabrics, construction, and fit. Over the years, this passion has developed into an exceptional eye for detail, often noticing the small things most people overlook. He has a remarkable instinct for colour, a precise eye for proportion, and a talent for unexpected combinations.

He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, where he focused on film and installations. His years in the arts shaped the way he sees clothing, giving him a strong sensitivity to detail, composition, colour, and character.

Together, they bring two complementary ways of seeing: Stephan naturally focuses on the details that make a garment special, while Valérie looks at the silhouette, the overall balance, and how a piece fits into everyday life.

What connects them is a shared love of getting dressed and feeling distinctive — of wearing clothes that give you character, confidence, and a sense of individuality, almost like becoming a character in a film.

At BORN.AT.SEA, these two perspectives meet: an obsession with detail, a sensitivity to silhouette, and a shared instinct for pieces that have something special about them.

HOW WE MAKE THINGS

For us, making good clothes starts with choosing the right materials and finding the right people to make them.

Materials with a reason

We use natural materials selected for their quality, feel, character, and ability to age beautifully. We are drawn to fabrics with something extra — a distinctive weave, a selvedge finish, a fabric developed specifically for us, or one made using techniques passed down through generations.

We particularly love fabrics that evolve with time. Indigo is one example: its colour changes with wear, making each garment increasingly personal. We look for materials that develop a patina rather than simply wearing out.

Even the smallest details matter. Our buttons, for example, are made from natural materials such as corozo rather than plastic. Every element is chosen with a purpose.

The people who make them

We currently make our garments in France, working with carefully selected manufacturers who share our standards and our way of working.

We favour family-run businesses, smaller manufacturers, and specialist workshops with skills that cannot easily be replicated elsewhere. What matters to us is not simply where something is made, but who makes it and what they know how to do.

We look for partners who care about their craft, are willing to collaborate with a small independent brand, and take pride in the finished piece. As BORN.AT.SEA grows, we will remain open to working with specialists beyond France when their particular expertise genuinely adds something to a product.

Built to last

We take our time with development, work closely with our manufacturing partners, and pay attention to the details that are easy to overlook.

The result is clothing made to be worn, lived in, and allowed to change with you — pieces that become more personal with time.
